An American singer with Boston roots said beleives she may be being targeted by Islamic extremists.

Singer Heather Schmid said she was trying to do good things to help improve the lives of others, but she believes a visit to Pakistan, where she performed an earthquake relief concert two years ago, may have made her a target of Islamic extremists.

"I've been very devoted to charity, and this was a very upsetting piece of reality," she said.

Schmid said when in Pakistan she was asked to perform for then President Pervez Musharraf and that appearance apparently angered Islamic extremists, who have recently, she believes, made her a target.

Schmid, a graduate of Boston University, said that a month ago her Web site was hacked into and personal information was taken down. She said that she then began receiving odd invitations and inquiries about her schedule.

"I knew that I am going down a different path. I knew that going there my manager told me not to go, but for me, it was right," she said.

Schmid said she was recently included in a YouTube video that she believes was put on the Internet by extremists.

Schmid said she went to the FBI detailing the story of the Web site intrusion. In the meantime, she said she will not live in fear and let the acts of extremists dictate how she will live.

"I'm not going to hide under my bed and keep my alarm on and never go out. I can't live that way," she said.
