A former high school football coach is accused of withdrawing money from an account intended for team uniforms to use at a strip club.

James Atkins, 43, of Revere, was indicted on 10 counts of larceny stemming from the alleged theft of about $10,000 from the Chelsea High School football team booster club, of which he was the president. A Suffolk County grand jury returned indictments charging Atkins with six counts of larceny over $250, three counts of larceny by scheme and one count of larceny by check for thefts between 2005 and 2007.

State and Chelsea police began investigating Atkins after team members' parents expressed concerns over some booster club account transactions.

Assistant District Attorney Edward Beagan said the alleged thefts include "the withdrawal of $500 from an ATM right next door to the Squire men's club at 1 in the morning."

Atkins also used team funds to buy airline tickets, make cash withdrawals at bank machines as far away as Alabama, pay for purchases at a Boston sports bar and cover other personal expenses, Beagan said.

Beagan said Atkins and his wife do put money into the account, but not enough to cover the withdrawals in question.

Atkins is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 4.
