More than 80 parakeets have been surrendered to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals after they were found living in a Peabody basement.

The 83 birds were brought from Elliott Place in Peabody to Nevins Farm in Methuen in cardboard boxes in the back of a pickup truck on Wednesday.

Some of the birds were newborns, while others had feathers missing from pecking at each other, MSPCA officials said.

The MSPCA, already caring for 12 parakeets, said it was trying to find other shelters to help with some of birds.
