Worcester police are looking for the person who fatally stabbed a 19-year-old Becker College student from Maryland following a fight in an off-campus apartment.

College Student Stabbed, Killed

William L. Smith, a sports management major from Scotland, Md., died early Sunday morning from a stab wound to the heart.

Smith is the nephew of Orlando “Tubby” Smith, the NCAA men’s basketball coach who won a national title at the University of Kentucky, according to the Worcester Telegram. He is currently head basketball coach at the University of Minnesota.

About 200 people, including Becker College students and administrators, participated in a candle-light vigil and procession Sunday night in the area where Smith was fatally stabbed.

Police said Smith was stabbed during a fight involving students and non-students that broke out during a house party and spilled out into the street.

"It is our belief at this point that these four or five individuals came into the house party. They did not belong to the school, and they were not friends with anyone in the house," said Worcester Police Sgt. Kerry Hazelhurst

The host of the party said that Smith was injured while trying to protect a friend.

McGinn said a weapon was recovered at the scene. No arrests were immediately made, but police said they interviewed numerous witnesses and were pursuing several leads.

Vice President of Student Affairs Kenneth Cameron said in a statement that Becker College had informed students and faculty of the tragedy and that counseling would be offered on the campus over the next two days.
