The 9-month-old boy fell four stories onto the sidewalk below on Tremont Street near the intersection of Cunard Street.

"The baby was on the ground -- bruised on the head, blood from the nose," one witnesses said. "When I looked up, the window was wide open, so I ran to the convenience store to have them call 911."

Relatives told NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper that the baby boy was named Jordani Rivera.

The baby's crib can be seen in the window. Investigators are still trying to figure out how the baby fell, but it appears the child somehow pushed the screen out before falling to the ground. Currently, window guards are not required by Massachusetts law.

"(Emergency responders) found the infant on the pavement suffering from head trauma. The child was transported to Boston Medical Center where he was pronounced (dead)," said Bruce Holloway, the director of field services.

The baby's father was caring for the child at the time of the incident. The baby's mother is headed back to Massachusetts. She was in Florida en route to the Dominican Republic when the incident happened.

About 18 children ages 10 and under die each year from falls from windows, according to Boston Children's Hospital. Another 4,700 children ages 14 and under will require medical treatment.
