Boston police said they arrested an off-duty Boston firefighter Tuesday night after responding to a call about a man in cardiac arrest after a fight.

Firefighter Charged In Assault

Officers were called at about 7:40 p.m. Tuesday to the Polish American Club at 1391 River St. in Hyde Park for a man in cardiac arrest.

When officers arrived, they said they found Paul Crowley, 62, of Whitman, lying in the parking lot not breathing. Police said he had visible scrapes and abrasions to his face, and scrapes and abrasions to his hands and knees.

The victim was taken to Brigham and Women Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition after suffering what appeared to be a massive heart attack.

Witnesses said Crowley had engaged in a physical altercation with a man identified as Paul Nemes, 58, of Norwood.

Witnesses said Nemes administered CPR to Crowley after the incident.

Nemes pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault charges and held on $1,000 bail.

The Boston Fire Department said Wednesday that Nemes, a 28-year veteran of the department, would remain on duty and continue working as a firefighter. The department said he would keep the department informed as the case proceeds.
