HOLLISTON, Mass. -- One local town is warning children and teens that they could lose their bikes if they are spotted riding without a helmet.
Town To Kids: No Helmet? Lose Your BikeNewsCenter 5's Shiba Russell reported that Holliston police said they could take a child's bike away for up to 15 days if they are caught riding without a helmet."Brain injuries are a very serious thing. I think that kids need to get the message just how serious it is," said Holliston grandmother Louise Bishop."It seems a little harsh to take it away because I don't know if in 15 days they will really understand the impact," said parent Karie Morrison-Logan."We are looking for the kids we have told many times over to wear their helmets," said Holliston police Officer David Gatchell.Police are targeting middle schoolers who often hang out at the Village Plaza biking and skateboarding without helmets.Police said first-time offenders will get off with a warning."We just want to keep them safe," Gatchell said.Last month, a vehicle on Cranberry Lane hit an 8-year-old boy on a bike. Although he was sent 30 feet into the air, he was wearing a helmet and survived."We don't want to seize the bikes. This is a step we are taking because we feel to keep the kids safe, we have to do this," said Gatchell.A letter from police will be sent home to elementary and middle schoolers on Thursday.
