BOSTON -- A New York man was accused Tuesday of kidnapping a teenager in Massachusetts and bringing her to New York to work as a prostitute, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.Michael Smith, 34, was charged with one count of kidnapping for his alleged role in the June 11 incident. Officials said that Boston police officers responded to a 911 call made from a pay phone on Washington Street in Brighton at about 3 a.m. on June 11.Upon arrival, they spoke with the visibly shaken and upset victim, then 17, who told them she had just escaped from the vehicle of a man she knew as "Daddy," for whom she said that she had been working as a prostitute in New York. She told officers she had just fled from a vehicle, where she had been confined by him and two of his associates. The teen was transported to Children's Hospital, where a rape kit was performed, and she was treated for scratches on her face and arms, a swollen cheek and red finger marks on her neck. Later the same morning, Boston Police spotted a vehicle matching the description the girl had given them. Police said that Smith and two females were in the vehicle.Police said the victim met with Smith at a hotel in Braintree in early June after she placed an ad on the Internet. The defendant responded to the ad and, after posing as a customer, told the victim that he would be taking her to New York to work as a prostitute for him.Smith allegedly drove her to a Connecticut hotel, where they stayed for two days, police said. They later drove on to Long Island, where they stayed at a motel for about a week.Assistant District Attorney Carrie Russell said the victim worked as a prostitute for Smith and gave him all of the money she earned. Smith allegedly threatened her continuously, and told her that he would kill her if she disobeyed him.Evidence further suggests that Smith sexually assaulted the teen on multiple occasions, beating her with his hands and a wooden hanger, police said. The victim was not allowed to leave the motel room and was watched at all times. The defendant, victim, and the female driver drove to Massachusetts, stopping briefly in Connecticut, where they picked up a second female outside of a hotel and continued driving. When they got off the highway in Brighton and proceeded to stop at a light in Oak Square, the victim escaped from the vehicle and called 911 for help."There was a time when prostituted teens were viewed as criminal offenders rather than victims," Conley said. “Those days are behind us. We know now that the vast majority of girls and teens involved in the sex trade are forced into it by others. Our goals now are to help these girls and hold those pimps accountable."Smith was held on $250,000 bail and ordered to remain in custody due to a parole warrant issued from New York.Smith's alleged female associates were also arrested and charged with similar offenses. The grand jury investigation developed evidence that they, too, were in fear of Smith. Prosecutors determined that they were more victims than offenders and terminated the charges against them.
