Radioactive kitty litter found in a Dumpster in West Bridgewater has cost the town $2,000, according to the Brockton Enterprise.

The litter was found in a trash bag that was scanned at a waste facility in Rochester. Officials said the litter is believed to have come from a West Bridgewater home, where a cat was undergoing treatment for cancer.

The cat's owner failed to dispose of the litter properly, the newspaper reported Friday. Pet owners who chose to take their animals home while they are undergoing cancer treatments are given directions about how to deal with the waste.

It became mandatory to scan for radioactive material at the facility after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
