BOSTON -- Investigators in California began a new search for human remains, as the case of accused kidnapper Clark Rockefeller took several unexpected twists Friday. On the day California police began digging in a San Marino back yard, a child actress from the 1940s came forward to say she is not Rockefeller’s mother, as he had told Boston police.Rockefeller is accused of kidnapping his 7-year-old daughter, Reigh, off a Boston street during a supervised visit in late July. His ex-wife, Sandra Boss, has custody of the child.
His arrest led the FBI to delve into Rockefeller's past, much of which he says he doesn't remember, but which authorities said is built on one lie after another.Rockefeller has been identified by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s department as a “person of interest” in the 1985 disappearance of John and Linda Sohus. At the time they went missing, Rockefeller, who authorities said was calling himself Christopher Chichester, was a tenant in their guest house.Investigators said they believe the remains of John Sohus were those found on the property during a swimming pool excavation in 1994. His wife has never been found.Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore said detectives will perform a "photo scan" of the grounds, then use cadaver-sniffing dogs.Meanwhile, former actress Ann Carter said she is not Rockefeller’s mother despite his claim that Carter, a star in the 1940s, raised him.“I am certainly not his mother,” Carter, 72, said.Carter starred with Humphrey Bogart in “The Two Mrs. Carrolls,” and in the horror classic “Curse of the Cat People.”The FBI has identified Rockefeller as Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, who grew up in Germany.“I just feel sorry for his real mother,” said Carter.Carter, who now lives near Seattle, said she believes Rockefeller claimed to be her son because he saw rumors on Web sites that she died in a car crash in the 1970s.“I would just imagine that this man who is certainly quite an actor is quite good at putting together this web of lies. I imagine he saw that on the Internet. Why would he choose me to be his mother?”Rockefeller, according to authorities, often told friends that his parents had died in a car crash.“He could see these facts and get the information from these facts that he needed to his pretending and if I was dead there would be no one to deny what he was saying,” Carter said. “He’s very smart,” Carter said, “but he’s in jail, which is where he belongs.”
