Time Capsule Found In Revolutionary War Monument

Hidden Treasure Sat In Quincy For More Than 100 Years

A crew doing routine work on a Quincy monument discovered a time capsule that dates back more than 100 years, according to the Patriot Ledger.

While taking apart the 114-year-old Abigail Adams Cairn on Tuesday, a masonry reconstruction team found a metal box inside the stone structure inside a brick-lined chamber, the newspaper reported.

The monument was built in 1896 by the Daughters of the American Revolution to mark the spot where the future first lady and 7-year-old John Quincy Adams watched the Battle of Bunker Hill and the burning of Charlestown.

A 1889 U.S. penny and a commemorative medal were found along with the box, which was soldered shut. Local historians guessed that the box may contain everyday items. It was brought to the historical society at the Adams Academy, where members will determine the best way to open it.

The cairn, at Franklin Street and Viden Road, will be taken apart stone by stone to be repaired and put back together again.
