NewsCenter 5’s Mary Saladna reported that Carol Campbell, of San Marino, spent an afternoon with Rockefeller years ago. Her father had met Rockefeller through the Rotary Club and was so impressed that he fixed up his daughter to have lunch with the man.

“He was going on and on with these, just, tales of where he's from – that he was the second duke of such-and-such from Bavaria or something,” Campbell said. “He had all these little sticky notes on his windshield as if to remind him of the stories he was telling,” she said.

Instead of taking her out to lunch, Rockefeller drove Cambell to the post office in a Datsun compact car and then took her around town while he ran his errands. The California native decided to cut the date short when Rockefeller, then called Christian Chichester, continued to describe his royal heritage.

“I thought it was odd that he said he was from Bavaria and he had this English accent. I finally tuned him out because I knew he was lying.”

Campbell said that Rockefeller sent her several affectionate letters after the failed encounter boasting about his noble background. She did not see him again, she said.
