Four area beaches have been closed to swimming because of high bacteria levels.

Wollaston Beach, in Quincy; the bayside beach on A Street, in Hull; Edgewater Beach, in Hull; and Gun Rock Beach, in Hull were closed.

The bacteria counts on Wollaston Beach were 2,380 at Rice Road, 199 at Milton Road, 119 at Sachem Street and 85 at Channing Street, the Patriot Ledger reported. The maximum count considered safe for saltwater swimming is 104. Although follow up tests showed bacteria levels at Wollaston Beach dropped to within a safe range, the beach has not been reopened to swimmers.

The bayside beach at A Street had a bacteria count of 227; Edgewater Beach had a bacteria count of 473; and Gun Rock Beach had a count of 346.

All other South Shore beaches tested were safe for swimming.
