Law Seeks Specific Goals Of Lay Group

New Chapters Banned From Meeting In Churches

POSTED: 5:48 pm EDT October 14, 2002

A group of lay Catholics formed in the wake of the priest sex abuse scandal is trying to convince church leaders it is not anti-church and not anti-Catholic.

NewsCenter 5's Amalia Barreda reported that a chapter of Voice of the Faithful that was meeting at St. Michael's parish in Andover, Mass., was banned from meeting in the church until Law reversed the ban over the weekend. Law indicated that the ban was still in effect for all new chapters of the group.

On its Web site, Voice of the Faithful lists its motto as "Keep the faith. Change the church." Its mission statement lists supporting structural change within the church as one of its goals, which has raised concerns among the church hierarchy.

Voice of the Faithful's president, Jim Post, said that he and other members of the group are working on a letter to send to Law and all the American bishops to spell out what they mean when they say structural change.

"What we were trying to do is to understand how we could prevent the kind of crisis that's occurred from happening again." Post said. "And when you look at it, you understand that it has to do with secrecy, with who reviewed the credentials."

Voice of the Faithful member Margaret Roylance said that the letter will clarify specific kinds of change that the group would like to see.

"We're certainly clarifying what we mean by giving specific examples," she said. "This is what we want to do. This is what we want to change. And there are changes, but it's not specifically changes in the structure. They're changes in the culture."

Roylance said one example of change is making sure that each parish has an active parish council.

"We want collaboration, not usurpation," she said. "We don't want to run things; we just want to be involved. To understand. To have the church respect our intelligence and our dignity and recognize that we have a right and a responsibility to use our God-given rights for the good of the church.

A spokesman for the church was not available for comment. Members of Voice of the Faithful said that Law wanting to learn more about the group is a sign that he might meet with them.
