FRANKLIN, Mass. -- A colony of feral cats living near a Franklin condominium complex slated to be captured and euthanized have been given a reprieve.
Feral Cats At Center Of Condo Fight NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that Dottie Luff has been feeding the cats near her home at the Highwood Road condos for years. But Pioneer Property Management wants to trap, remove and destroy the cats."(Removing the cats) would probably kill me. That's what the doctor says is keeping me alive. When he greets me he says, 'How are the cats?' Not, 'How are you?'" Luff said.But not all of the residents share Luff's love of the wild felines."My front garden is a litter box for 15 cats, not to mention the spraying and the cat fighting," resident Madelyn McAneny said.McAneny said she has seen and smelled enough and the cats must go."The smell of cat urine and feces is not pleasant. I don't want to live with it anymore," she said.Medway's Purr-Fect Cat Shelter, a local no-kill nonprofit shelter, and the town's dog officer have fed and monitored the colony, which now numbers about 11, for years."I don't see a problem. They're all right down there. They scattered when they see you. I don't see a problem," said Animal Control Officer Tracey Taddeo."It seems to me that the animal officers that are public servants are completely biased to these cat people and the (Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). I don't think it's fair," McAneny said."They are really not hurting anyone. No. It's just someone who doesn't like cats," Luff said.
