BOSTON -- Jim Thistle was the epitome of a leader, a giant in journalism who served as a mentor to many of the best in Boston television.

Although humble about his own role in defining a standard of excellence in broadcast journalism, those who benefited from his extraordinary vision and guiding hand are quick to credit Jim as a superior teacher and role model.

Generations of journalism professionals and students owe a debt of gratitude to Jim. He will be sorely missed by all of us at WCVB, but always remembered for his unique ability to teach and encourage everyone to serve the television viewers of Boston with the highest standards of integrity and excellence. The entire Thistle family is in our thoughts and prayers today, with sincere condolences from everyone at Channel 5.
