BOSTON -- Police have arrested a second man in connection with a deadly hit-and-run accident in Easton.

Daniel Faria, of Quincy, was charged with lying to police after he allegedly tried to help his brother, Michael, cover up the accident, which occurred last Saturday on Washington Street.

Daniel Faria is a police officer employed by the state Mental Health Department. Faria was arrested Friday in Boston at the U.S. Constitution where he was working security, the Brockton Enterprise reported.

Michael Faria was arrested earlier this week and charged with motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of an accident.

Police said he struck John McCarthy of Brockton as McCarthy walked on Route 138 in Easton.

Prosecutor Jessica Lennon said Faria was text messaging on his cell phone when he struck McCarthy. Faria told a friend he had been looking down at his phone, text messaging, when he thought he hit someone, according to Lennon.

"When police arrived, the victim was still alive. It is quite possible that if this defendant had contacted 911 at the time of the motor vehicle crash, the victim would be alive today," Lennon said.

After the incident, Faria fled to Maine and fixed the broken windshield and bumper on his black Infiniti SUV, prosecutors said.
