BOSTON -- Mayor Thomas M. Menino issued a heat advisory for Saturday, as temperatures are expected to reach the mid- to high-90 degrees. The city is prepared to offer residents a reprieve from the heat at Boston Centers for Youth and Families (BCYF) community centers. Boston residents are welcomed to enjoy the air conditioned centers during business hours. For information regarding hours and pool availability at specific BCYF facilities, residents are urged to contact the mayor’s 24-hour hotline at 617-635-4500.
"Everyone should enjoy the weather, but be safe while doing so. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses and injuries, but everyone should remember to limit their activities during very hot weather," Menino said.Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids and avoid beverages that contain caffeine or alcohol. Additional measures to beat the heat include avoiding cooking, taking cool showers or baths and wearing loose, light-colored clothing. As part of an effort to raise awareness about resources that the city offers during a heat emergency, the city of Boston's Elderly Commission has sent out automated calls to seniors as well. The Elderly Commission is advising senior citizens to contact the mayor’s 24-hour hotline should they have questions.
