The body of a Lawrence soldier who was kidnapped in Iraq more than one year ago has been found.

NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that Alex Jimenez, 25, and two other soldiers were kidnapped in Iraq on May 12, 2007 after their unit was ambushed. His body was found in Iraq.

Jimenez's father, Ramon "Andy" Jimenez, said that he was notified by the Army on Thursday that Iraqi authorities found his son's remains two days ago. The body was identified through dental records. Personal items were also found with the body.

"A lot of folks have asked me, 'How is your son? How is Alex?' My plans were from the beginning that Alex would tell you -- each and every one of you -- how he was himself," Ramon Jimenez said.

An Islamic militant group, claiming to show the kidnapping, posted a videotape online but only military IDs were shown, so family and friends continued to hold out hope.

Jimenez's mother, Maria Duran, said officials came to her home in Queens, N.Y., to deliver the grim news.

"I want to tell everyone to remember him. He was wonderful and loved everybody," she said.

Yellow ribbons were hung at local schools, and vigils were held at local churches while the soldier was missing.

"I think he made a difference, and he touched this community so deep. He is in everybody's house. He is everyone's son," family friend Wendy Lucon said.
