BOSTON -- A Massachusetts-based electric company is helping customers to save some trees and also plant some more in their communities.NSTAR will make a $1 donation to the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation from now until July 31 for every customer who chooses to receive his or her bill electronically.“Customers are benefiting the environment in two ways with this program -- they are helping to save trees by (going) paperless, while at the same time making sure additional trees are planted in their community,” said Joseph Nolan, NSTAR senior vice president of customer and corporate relations.
The Go Green Grants will help DCR plant more trees in NSTAR’s service area."Because trees consume carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, we all benefit every time a new one is planted,” said Bill Hayes, NSTAR’s senior arborist. “This program gives us the opportunity to give back directly to our communities through tree-friendly grants.”NSTAR originally donated $10,000 as the seed money for the program and will add more donations as more customers decide to go paperless.“We currently have about 150,000 customers who are paperless,” said Caroline Allen, NSTAR spokesperson. “Since we launched the Go Green Grants, we've had about 3,700 more customers sign up. We hope to get even more as the summer continues.”
