AUBURN, Mass. -- Some residents in Auburn and surrounding areas were confused by the Fourth of July jet flyover Friday night, police said. The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reported that Auburn police received numerous phone calls from residents of a plane possibly about to crash at about 8 p.m.“It sounded like a jet,” Auburn police Sgt. Kenneth A. Charlton told the newspaper. “But it was flying really low.”
Charlton said he didn’t see anything, but everyone at the gas station was “looking up.”Turns out, it was the two F-15 Eagles from the 104th Fighter Wing on their way to fly over the Charles River Esplanade, police said. The noise startled many residents, who called the police looking for answers.“When you’re in a small town, word of things like this tends to spread pretty quickly,” Auburn police Sgt. Scott Mills said.Auburn is between Boston and Westfield, Mass., which is where the 104th Fighter Wing is based.Police said an overcast sky added to the confusion, not allowing people to see if it was the flyover that made the noise.
