A serious car crash on Route 128 northbound in Danvers early Wednesday forced emergency crews to close the roadway while they cleared the scene.

Officials said at least one person was seriously injured in the head-on crash, which occurred north of Endicott Street about 4:20 a.m.

Trooper said an unidentified adult male was operating a 1996 Saturn sedan southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 128 north in Danvers when he had a head-on crash with a 2000 Isuzu Trooper SUV operated by Kirk A. Palmer, 44, of Nahant.

Both operators sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash and were taken to Beverly Hospital.

The cause of the collision was not immediately clear, but crews on the scene said it appeared the driver was driving southbound on the northbound side of the road.

Motorists were being advised to seek alternate routes and to detour to Route 114. The road was re-opened by 6 a.m.
