Neil Entwistle's mother was led out of court in tears Tuesday during her son's murder trial when a woman who works as a "welcoming lady" for Hopkinton recalled him as a loving, attentive husband.

Pamela Jackson said that she visited with the Entwistles at their home on Jan. 15, 2006. During their meeting, Jackson said that every time the baby made a sound or giggled, he would divert his eyes and concentrate on the baby.

"It was adorable. It seemed he had been away in England for some time and missed the baby terribly," Jackson said.

The testimony brought Neil Entwistle's mother, Yvonne, to tears, and she was led out of the courtroom by her husband, Cliff Entwistle.

"Mr. Entwistle told me he wanted to test the area and see if this is a nice place to live. He told me that he was self-employed and in the insurance industry. He told me that he had to rent because not having three years of income verification in the United States, he would not qualify for a mortgage," Jackson said.

Jackson said that he told her that he had a job interview lined up for that week, and he inquired about local country clubs and activities for Rachel and Lillian Entwistle.

"They told me that they were in the process of furniture shopping and that the next day was Martin Luther King Day and that they were going to be shopping for furniture," Jackson said. "(They) were just a lovely family."

Earlier Tuesday, Neil and Rachel's former landlord testified that the couple paid thousands of dollars in upfront costs before moving into the Hopkinton home.

Prosecutors have argued that Neil Entwistle, 29, shot and killed his wife Rachel, 27, and their 9-month-old daughter, Lillian, in January 2006 in their Hopkinton home because he faced heavy debt and was unhappy with his sex life.

Kim Puig, who owned the home at 6 Cubs Path with her husband, said that the couple paid her $8,100 before they moved into the home, which included $2,700 for first month's rent, $2,700 for last month's rent and a $2,700 security deposit.

Puig testified that the Entwistles signed a three-month lease with her, even though the couple had requested a six-month lease. Puig said that she decided on the shorter lease based on information she received from her real estate agent.

Defense attorneys have argued that Neil Entwistle was grief-stricken after finding his wife and baby dead and went to England to be consoled by his parents.

A number of witnesses testified Tuesday about Neil Entwistle's flight to England, including Carol Cox, a customer service supervisor for British Airways.

Cox said that Neil Entwistle approached her on the morning of Jan. 21, 2006, to purchase a flight to London. She said that he bought a ticket at boarded an 8:20 a.m. flight to Heathrow Airport.

On Monday, Rachel Entwistle's stepfather, Joseph Matterazzo, testified about phone calls he received from Neil Entwistle from England after the young mother and baby's bodies were found. In one call, Matterazzo said that Neil Entwistle said he wanted his wife and daughter buried together, "because that's the way I left them."
