BOSTON -- Parts of a Harwich road remained closed Monday as crews continued to clean up after an oil tanker crash that spilled thousands of gallons of home heating oil last week.Town officials wanted to reopen Great Western Road Friday, but another area of contamination was discovered near the intersection of Lothrop Avenue, the Cape Cod Times reported. Harwich police said the road could reopen as early as Wednesday. The crash happened Wednesday afternoon when the Cape Cod Oil truck overturned onto a pickup truck. About 3,000 to 4,000 gallons of the tanker's 10,500-gallon load of home heating oil leaked onto the road, a nearby bike trail and an abutting vernal pool.
The truck drivers escaped with broken ribs and lacerations, the paper reported. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
