BOSTON -- Sen. Edward Kennedy may learn Monday what caused him to have a seizure at this Cape Cod home over the weekend. The senator will undergo more heart, brain and blood tests and the results are expected either late Monday afternoon or Tuesday.
VideoMassachusetts' senior senator has been hospitalized since Saturday, when he was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital after being taken to an emergency room near his home in Hyannisport, Mass., where doctors suspected Kennedy, 76, may have suffered a stroke. His physician, Dr. Larry Ronan, later said it had been a seizure and that the senator was "not in any immediate danger."Kennedy is the second-longest serving member of the Senate and a dominant figure in national Democratic Party politics. He was elected in 1962, filling out the term won by his brother, John F. Kennedy, who was elected president in 1960.A steady stream of family and friends visited Kennedy over the weekend, including his daughter Kara, his niece Caroline, his stepchildren, and many other relatives. As Kennedy rested, watching Red Sox and Celtics games on television Sunday, he took a call from Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama, and his condition was a topic of national political discourse."He sounded like his usual old self and so my sense is that everybody's optimistic about the prognosis. Teddy is back on the mend and I suspect will be on the floor of the senate immediately to start doing the people's business," Obama said. In October, Kennedy had surgery to remove a blockage in his left carotid artery, which supplies blood to the face and brain. After the surgery, Kennedy resumed his busy schedule on Capitol Hill and across Massachusetts.
