A man and a woman were indicted on felony charges for allegedly assaulting a child, who is now 15 months old and severely disabled.

The Berkshire Eagle reported Crystal L. Balsamo, 25, and Donald A. Murray IV, 28, both of Pittsfield, were arraigned Thursday on charges involving an incident that allegedly happened in September 2007.

Prosecutors said the child suffered “substantial bodily injury.”

The Eagle reported not-guilty pleas were entered for Balsamo and Murray, who were both charged with single counts of battery on a child, substantial bodily injury; permitting another to commit wanton or reckless assault and battery on a child, substantial bodily injury; and reckless endangerment to a child, serious bodily injury resulting.

Officials did not say who has custody of the child now.
