BOSTON -- A local car dealership is going the extra mile to help its employees save money during their daily commutes.NewsCenter 5's Pam Cross reported that A.J. DeAmicis starts working at 6:30 a.m. at Lexus of Northborough. George Rooney begins at 8 a.m. The two co-workers live in Townsend and Pepperell and now carpool because their employer was willing to be flexible with start times.

"They pretty much allowed us to change our hours so we can carpool at least four days a week. And we're saving a lot of money in gas -- probably about $200 a month," DeAmicis said. The luxury car dealership has 53 employees, and some travel long distances to get to work."We have them coming from Newport, R.I. -- two from the New Hampshire area," said Gene Robbins, of Lexus of Northborough.Managers did the math and offered to adjust."And on a monthly basis it can save as much as $400 or $500, which is a car payment with the insurance," Robbins said.Nationwide, 75 percent of commuters drive alone. It's worse in Massachusetts. According to census data, only 9 percent arrange carpools. You don't have to convince Dave Demers. He's arranged carpooling with a co-worker and said it's a matter of dollars and sense."I used to average about $220 a month in gas. Just last month it was $362," Demers said. While his employer wants to keep staffers satisfied and working hard, he's looking at the overall budget."It's not just gasoline. Home heating is going up, so if I can save money with this, I can afford to heat my house during winter," Demers said. Some carpoolers vow that even if gas prices eventually come down they'll continue to share the ride.
