A school crossing guard was bitten by a raccoon in Swampscott on Tuesday.

The guard was stationed at the Clarke School on Norfolk Avenue at about 2:05 p.m. when she felt something rub up against her leg and then bite her, according to police.

The crossing guard was taken to North Shore Medical Center for treatment.

The school was held in lockdown until the raccoon was found and euthanized.

The animal was located behind a house across from the school. It was secured by Marblehead's animal control officer, and tests will be conducted for rabies.
