Car In Water In Rumney

Three People Killed When Car Crashes Into River

Police Say Speed Might Have Been Factor

Officials said three young people died after a car went into the Baker River in Rumney just before 9 a.m. Sunday.

Speed May Be Factor In Deadly Rumney Crash

Police said the crash happened on Buffalo Road near the Rumney Climbing Rocks area. Some people nearby ran to help but there was nothing they could do until rescue crews arrived.

Emergency workers said the 1998 Toyota Corolla had left the roadway, struck several trees, gone down over an embankment and ended up in the river.

According to police, the victims are Brandy Duguay, 19, of Thornton; Matthew Milton, 19, of Thornton; and Jason Marrer, 24, of Holderness. Police believed that Duguay was driving.

"He was a good boy, without a doubt," said Ron Monroe, Milton's uncle. "Very energetic. He was spontaneous. He had fun. He was a good boy."

Officials said two victims died at the scene. The third victim died after being airlifted to a local hospital.

A roadside memorial was created near the scene of the crash. Friends and relatives gathered there the next day to remember the victims.

"I didn't even really want to come," said Nicole Stillings, a friend of Milton's. "It makes you think, you know? Everything is gone just like that. Just gone."

Stillings sad she knew Milton since elementary school. Sean Summers is his former roommate and said Milton was supposed to go over to his house on Sunday.

"I tried calling Matt to find out when I was going to pick him up," Summers said.

Duguay was described as an upbeat, friendly teenager surrounded by good friends.

"She was a wonderful, very outgoing girl who had a good future ahead of her, and it's a tragedy this thing had happened," said her step-grandfather, Lawrence Richardson.

The crash happened just down the street from crash in October that left Marrer unconscious. He survived after being flown to a hospital in Portland, Maine.

State police said the initial investigation indicates that speed was a contributing factor in the accident. Other factors are being explored as part of the ongoing investigation, police said.
