BOSTON -- The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority said they are cracking down on toll evaders.Executive Director Alan LeBovidge said they're stopping motorists who falsely claim to be from East Boston and the North End to get a reduced resident toll rate."We found 700 people who don't live there anymore and are still using the resident pass," LeBovidge said. "We found certain limo services, etc., have been using private car transponders when they should be paying commercial rates."
The turnpike also has the state police looking for people driving through the FastLane with expired plates. This crackdown is a part of new efficiencies at authority. Pike officials said they've also saved $8 million in costs in 2008 by slashing spending on outside consultants and lawyers.
