BOSTON -- The driver of a delivery truck carrying medical supplies that smashed into eight cars before bursting into flames early Thursday in Allston is now facing multiple charges in connection with the crashes.Timothy Newton, 38, of Revere, Mass., will be charged with leaving the scene of an accident (property damage), leaving the scene of an accident (personal injury) and driving to endanger, Boston police said.Newton’s license to operate has also been suspended again. His license was suspended in 1997 after seven violations or accidents, and was suspended again in 2005. In 2007, it was reinstated after he took a driver safety course.
Three people, including Newton, suffered minor injuries in the series of crashes that began about 7:20 a.m. Thursday when the truck Newton was driving went out of control on Commonwealth Avenue, hitting a pickup truck near Babcock Avenue which went flying into a fence bordering nearby subway tracks. The truck then proceeded to careen westbound down Commonwealth Avenue, hitting four other cars near Brighton Avenue and sending a Lexus into a storefront window. It then hit a Lexus which it dragged down the street until both vehicles burst into flames.Hazmat teams were called in because of the flammable medical supplies the truck was carrying, but only three people, including Newton, were hurt. They were all treated for minor injuries at nearby hospitals.Newton had no comment on the accident when he was released from the hospital with a cast on his leg, except to apologize. A woman at the scene said he told her he thought he blacked out at the wheel.
