FRANCONIA, N.H. -- A Massachusetts woman was killed after a boulder fell on her while she was out hiking in New Hampshire with her family. Lt. Todd Bogardus of New Hampshire Fish and Game said Shu Qin, 28, of Wellesley, Mass., was hiking on the Falling Waters Trail in Franconia. The family was about 1 1/2 miles from the trailhead near Cloudland Falls at about 2:30 on Thursday afternoon when the 5-foot-by-3-foot, 20-inch thick boulder broke off a ledge and fell about 40 feet, striking her.
Bogardus said the woman, originally from Shanghai, China, suffered severe head injuries. She was taken to Littleton Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead. He said the incident was simply a tragic accident.
