Cardinal Bernard Law faced more questions Wednesday in a lawsuit brought by alleged victims of a pedophile priest.

NewsCenter 5's Kelley Tuthill reported that this was the fourth day in a deposition Law is giving to answer questions regarding retired priest Paul Shanley, who is accused of molesting young boys.

"One thing that I felt was helpful and interesting was to hear the cardinal explain the evolution of the policy of the archdiocese with respect to child abuse by priests," said Law's attorney, J. Owen Todd.

Family members of the alleged victims said that the focus of the questioning must remain on the victims.

"The reason why we're here is because my son and other children were abused, raped, by a priest under the supervision of Cardinal Law," said Rodney Ford, the father of an alleged victim. "That focus has to remain."

The Fords' attorney, Eric MacLeish, dismissed comments made by archdiocese lawyers that settlement talks were ongoing.

"I can state confidently that settlement discussion with the archdiocese have been off the table for weeks now," MacLeish said. "There has been absolutely no indication of any interest."

If the lawsuits against the archdiocese go to trial, church attorneys said they are concerned about seating a jury in light of ongoing publicity, including Tuesday's release of Law's videotaped deposition taken in June.

"We absolutely have a concern, and it's something that we will continue to look at and monitor as the pretrial discovery phase goes forward," archdiocese attorney Wilson Rogers Jr. said. "A trial is not something that's about to start, so that will have to be weighed over the course of time."

MacLeish said that he would be ready to try the case by November.

Thursday, New Hampshire Bishop John McCormack will be deposed, to answer questions about his decisions regarding abusive priests while he was working in the Boston Archdiocese.
