Hours after an Amber Alert was issued Wednesday for a 6-month-old Arlington boy, the child and his mother arrived at the police station.

NewsCenter 5's Mary Saladna reported that Danielle Boyle, 24, came to the station with the child, Lucas Whalen, just after 7:30 p.m.

Police had issued a statewide bulletin for Boyle and the child's father Michael Whalen, 42, saying that the child was in imminent danger of harm.

They were able to make contact, Saladna reported, with Boyle through an intermediary and they believed she was in the Burlington or Woburn, Mass., area.

The intermediary convinced Boyle to bring the child to the station. When she arrived, she was met by several officers who whisked her and the child inside.

The boy's aunt, Sheila Boyle, said the child is safe. "He had no apparent injuries but was transported to an area hospital for a precautionary medical examination," Massachusetts state police said in a statement.

About 8 p.m, police located the car the couple had been driving at the Burlington Mall. A search was under way for Whalen.

Police said they issued the Amber Alert after a hearing in which Whalen and Boyle lost custody of their son.

"After learning that the court had awarded custody to another family member, the biological parents fled the area and made statements that they were not willing to turn over the child," Arlington Police Department Chief Frederick Ryan said.

"He (Whalen) has been making statements and threats," said Massachusetts State Police Trooper Eric Benson. "The nature of the threats and statements were of significant concern to law enforcement and led us to believe that Lucas (was) in great danger."
