The FBI is investigating a rash of bank robberies in the greater Boston area.

There have been more than a dozen around the region in the past month, including several in Belmont.

One branch of the East Cambridge Savings Bank in Belmont has been held up three times in less than two months. The last time it was robbed, another bank was being held up across town.

Investigators said it's not a coincidence that robberies are up when people are struggling to pay their bills.

"In one of the interviews, they specifically mentioned that they were facing foreclosure on their home and that was the driving force behind getting involved in bank robberies," said the FBI's Randy Jarvis.

The FBI believes the same man is responsible for as many as 13 robberies, from Belmont to Quincy.

The FBI considers the man armed and dangerous.
