A man riding in a car involved in a deadly crash stole the car of a Good Samaritan who had stopped to help, according to police.

NewsCenter 5’s Todd Kazakiewich reported Kejaun T. Carney, 26, of Mattapan, was a passenger in the car of Lionel Avila, 27, of Boston, during an overnight crash, according to police.

Avila suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Carney exited the vehicle and stole a 2008 Dodge sedan driven by a Good Samaritan who had stopped to help.

Police later found the Dodge in Mattapan, and learned that Carney had been taken to the hospital for a head injury.

Police said the crash occurred when 21-year-old Bruce Bilotta, of Randolph, tried to pass another car on Route 95 North, when he struck the rear of Avila’s Chrysler 300.

“We were moving over into the right lane, and there was this car in front of us, and it’s not really moving,” said 20-year-old Gelson R. Goncalves, of Randolph, Mass., who was a passenger in Bilotta’s car. “We just pretty much hit the car.”

Both cars spun off the road.

Goncalves received minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.

“They gave me two Tylenol and told me I’m OK but my back is just killing me right now,” Goncalves said.

No charges had been filed on Sunday.
