Sex Offender's Probation RevokedCorey Deen Saunders, 26, a Level 3 sex offender, is accused of raping the boy on Jan. 30 while the child's mother worked on a computer nearby at the New Bedford Free Public Library. Level 3 is the most serious sex offender designation and is given to offenders considered most likely to reoffend. At the time of the alleged library attack, Saunders was on probation after serving four years in prison for a 1999 conviction of an attempted rape of a 7-year-old boy.On Thursday, a videotape of the New Bedford boy's description of how Saunders allegedly lured him into a private area of the library and sexually assaulted him was played during a probation violation hearing. On the tape, the child told a psychologist that a man approached him at the library while he was reading in the children's room."Yes. He said, 'Can I ask you questions?' And I said, 'What?' And he said, again, 'Can I ask you questions?' And then I said, 'What?'" the boy said. The boy then said a man told him to follow him to an aisle between the bookcases, and then graphically described being sexually assaulted."Then he was right in front of me. And ... right in front of me. And he said, 'Can I touch you?' And he went right ahead and touched me," the boy said."Was that on your pants? On top of your pants or under your pants?" the psychologist asked."Under my pants," he said.Prosecutors said Saunders violated his probation both by committing a new crime and by violating a condition that prohibited him from having unsupervised contact with children."When he went to the library that day, there were other open tables with nobody sitting down and he chose the table with a 6-year-old child," said prosecutor Maryclare Flynn."I don't think him sitting across the table is exactly what the probation conditions envisioned when they talked about 'unsupervised contact with minor children,'" said defense attorney Alan Zwirblis. After watching the video, Judge Robert Kane said he found the boy "certainly credible" and his account of the alleged rape "sequential, coherent and detailed."Kane sentenced Saunders to the five-year maximum for attempted rape, the charge for which he was on probation. Zwirblis had asked for two years. To protect the child's identity, the videotape was only shown to the judge, Saunders and lawyers. Reporters and other people in the courtroom were only allowed to listen to the audio.Saunders was charged with indecent assault and battery on a child under 14; rape of a child under 16 (second offense); and enticing a child under 16 in connection with the Jan. 30 incident. The trial on those charges is expected to start in the summer.
