BOSTON -- Police are searching for a man and woman who broke into a number of cars that were parked at gyms in West Roxbury, Brookline and Needham to steal wallets and credit cards.
Boston police said that at least eight cars were broken into. The pair is accused of stealing the victims' wallets and using their credit cards to make fraudulent purchases for thousands of dollars at several different stores.
Video: Pair Sought In Car Break-Ins At Gyms"They walk in and you watch them leave their car, and they don't have a purse. All it is is keys in their hands, so if someone is watching the cars, they know that that vehicle has a bag in it," said Donald Wightman, of the Boston Police Department.
Once the victim is in the gym, officials said that the pair breaks into the vehicle and goes on a shopping spree.
"They know they have 45 minutes to an hour once the person gets into the gym for a normal workout. They then bring the credit cards into high-end electric stores," Wightman said.
Among the clubs targeted, officials said that the thieves have broken into Gold's Gym in West Roxbury and Healthworks in Chestnut Hill.
All the store videos viewed so far show the same two people making the transactions, officials said. A witness saw a suspicious car with a male and female in it near a couple of the car break-ins. It is described as a maroon Ford Probe or similar car.
Anyone with information about the identity of the pair was urged to call police at 617-343-4595.
