Police were chasing a 45-year-old man who ran a stop sign. His car was going about 65 mph when it crashed into the SUV at the intersection of Townsend and Lunenberg streets.

"It (the car) came down the street and your heard boom," said one witness. "The mother and child got out of the car. The cops were everywhere with guns."

The mother and child were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The man was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries, according to police.

He has been charged with failing to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and possession of stolen license plates.
