City Officials Debate Holding Big Events At Park

City park and recreation officials are worried that too many large-scale events on the Boston Common are over-stressing one of the nation's oldest parks and at least one has proposed curtailing use of the venue for big gatherings.

Boston Park and Recreation Commissioner Antonia Pollak told the City Council Wednesday that big concerts and other events should probably be held at the mostly-concrete City Hall Plaza rather than at the 48-acre park, the Boston Globe reported.

Park advocates estimate that about 1,000 events were held there in the last year. Although having events there discourages vagrancy and vandalism, they say, events also bring trash, noise and damages that nearby residents and colleges dislike.

Work has been under way at the Parade Ground in an effort to grow grass back at the site, and the city is also re-paving and doing other maintenance work on park paths and fountains.
