BROOKLINE, Mass. -- One building burned to the ground and others were damaged when a fire broke out early Sunday.The four-alarm fire on Sewall Avenue destroyed a vacant Victorian home that was in the process of being converted to condominiums, authorities said. Two nearby homes suffered some damage, and 120 residents were forced to evacuate. Some were allowed to return home Sunday afternoon.
Watch Video"The fireman was trying to knock my door down. We couldn't get out the side entrance because the fire was too close," said neighbor Francine Welty.The heavy smoke also forced the residents of a nearby apartment building out into the cold. They kept warm on buses that had been brought to the scene.Three firefighters suffered minor injuries, according to the Brookline Fire Department. One was taken to Beth Israel, the other two were taken to Brigham and Women's.The cause of the fire is under investigation.
