NEW BEDFORD, Mass. -- New Bedford is proposing changes in the wake of an assault on a 6-year-old boy inside the city's library recently, allegedly by a convicted sex offender. Corey Saunders is a Level 3 offender and officials did not know he was living in the community. At a meeting Thursday night, city councilors acted on two proposals and urged state action on a third.
Councilors pushed forward the mayor's proposal to create "child safety zones" in and around buildings that house libraries and schools, and around parks. They also advanced a plan that would ban all Level 2 and 3 sex offenders from entering any public building. They also urged state lawmakers to enact a law similar to Jessica's Law in Florida that would restrict sex offenders statewide.
