Days after a 6-year-old boy was allegedly assaulted at the New Bedford Free Public Library by a Level 3 sex offender, city officials came together to look at library security and additional measures to stop similar incidents from happening in the future.

NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that the library's Board of Trustees said it plans to improve security monitors and possibly lower bookshelves to increase visibility.

"The most horrendous of all crimes has found it’s way into our beautiful library. This must be stopped immediately," said library trustee John Lang.

Corey Deen Saunders, 26, of New Bedford, is accused of raping a child at the library last week. He was charged with indecent assault and battery on a child under 14; rape of a child under 16 (second offense); and enticing a child under 16 and ordered held without bail.

The library already has a state-of-the-art security camera system and is regularly patrolled by police, but Mayor Scott Lang said more must be done.

"I have asked the library trustees to consider a system that would require a photo ID and a library swipe card so we would know who was in and out of the buildings and at what times," he said.

The mayor also wants all children at the library under the age of 10 to be accompanied by an adult, and the adult must be with the child at all times.

Saunders is one of about 50 Level 3 sex offenders in the city of New Bedford. Level 3 is the most serious sex offender designation and is given to offenders considered most likely to reoffend.
