Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in a crash that claimed the life of a Scituate high school athlete, Cohasset police said.

Timothy Mahoney, 16, was a passenger in a car driven by Christopher Barrow, 18, who is also a student at the school.

Barrow crashed a 2003 Toyota Tundra pickup on Route 3A early Saturday morning near the Scituate town line, police said. He could face a charge of vehicular homicide.

"Charges will probably be brought against Christopher Barrow," police Lt. William Quigley told the Boston Globe. "We believe he was going too fast for the road conditions at that time."

Quigley said police are investigating whether alcohol played a role in the crash. "There was alcohol present," Quigley told the newspaper.

Mahoney, a sophomore, played both hockey and lacrosse. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Barrow was in critical condition Saturday night at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
