A college student was injured Thursday morning when she was hit by a truck in Lowell.
The University of Massachusetts at Lowell student suffered head trauma when she was hit by a Dodge Ram pickup truck on University Avenue. The woman, Rachel Carnes, 21, of Haverhill, was sitting on a bench waiting for a shuttle bus in front of Cumnock Hall.
After hitting Carnes, the truck, driven by Jeffery Hoban, 25, of Dracut, hit two utility poles, knocking them to the ground.
"I heard some tires screeching and I heard a big bang. I looked over and I saw a car hit the wall over there. It went up in the air a little bit and hit a girl," witness Matthew Norton said.
Carnes, a senior majoring in business, was taken by medical helicopter to Boston Medical Center, where she had surgery. There is no word on her condition.
Police believe Hoban had some sort of medical episode.
"We had a UMass Lowell campus officer that was on the opposite side of the light when the vehicle went through. He observed the driver and said it appeared he was having some type of seizure," Lowell police Lt. Tim Crowley said.
Hoban was treated and released from Saints Medical Center in Lowell.
The crash is under investigation.
