Winter-like weather will return with a vengeance Monday as the National Weather Service issued a heavy snow warning for much of Massachusetts and a winter storm warning for areas south of Boston except for the Cape.

A low-pressure center will move up the Atlantic coast late Sunday evening and spread snow across much of southern New England in the overnight hours.

The heaviest snow is expected to fall between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday morning, creating very poor visibility and difficult driving.

“The peak of the storm will occur during the Monday morning commute. However, the snow will continue through early afternoon, resulting in difficult travel conditions,” said Storm Team 5 meteorologist Mike Wankum.

“Snowfall rates could be 1 to 2 inches per hour during the early morning and it will be windy along the coast,” predicted Wankum.

By the end of Monday, the storm could dump over a foot of snow in parts of the state, with less snow to the south.

Snow totals should be around 7 to 10 inches in Boston. West of Worcester, snowfall could approach 14 inches. South of Boston should see 4 to 6 inches. Toward the Cape 1 to 3 inches will fall because warm air will mix in.

The snow should end Monday evening.
