UPDATED: 9:46 am EST January 11, 2008

Wareham police were at the scene of a serious accident on High Street early Friday where one car smashed into a parked vehicle at the intersection of High Street and Cedar Street, and the driver was killed.

Police identified the driver as Samantha Callow, 15, of Wareham. They said she was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses who live in the neighborhood said the collision occurred about 3 a.m. They said it appeared the young female driver of the car was being chased by police with her car headlights out when she crashed into a parked car.

Police said an officer observed the car operating without lights and made an attempt to stop it, putting on his lights. He said the car continued at a high rate of speed and failed to make a turn, resulting in the crash.

The accident is under investigation.
