BOSTON -- The westbound lanes of the Ted Williams Tunnel were closed for a time Friday afternoon after a truck hit an overhead, electronic sign.

State police said a truck hit the sign at about 2:45 p.m., and as they tried to clear the road, a second truck hit the sign.

Massachusetts Turnpike spokesman Mac Daniel said instead of moving that truck and risking the sign falling, authorities kept the truck in place until maintenance crews arrived to cut the sign down.

The crash was cleared and tunnel reopened just before 4 p.m. on Friday.

Westbound traffic on Interstate 90 was diverted to the Sumner Tunnel and Route 1A, and traffic backed up to Logan International Airport.

The truck driver who originally hit the sign hasn't been found.
