In Brighton, emergency crews responded to a call on a roof collapse at a Rite Aid pharmacy early Sunday evening that left one person with minor injuries.

NewsCenter 5's Pam Cross reported that the collapse happened just just before 6 p.m. at Market and Surrey streets.

Boston police said five people were in the store at the time. One customer was hit with some debris but no one was seriously hurt, officials said.

"When we arrived at the scene we immediately started a search of the building to make sure everybody was out. We got a hold of the manager. He said he had four employees and one patron in the building. We checked everybody out. The patron was hit with some ceiling tiles. He's been sent to St. Elizabeth's Hospital," Deputy Fire Chief Dennis Keeley said.

Fire officials said the roof collapsed because of the weight of the snow on it and because of the heavy rain that followed the recent snowstorms.

"Half of the roof is collapsed due to the snow and the walls have started to buckle in," Keeley said.

Keeley said it's a brick building with a wooden, truss roof and "When we have a condition like this with an heavy snow followed by a heavy rain, those roof drains get clogged up and there's tremendous amount of weight, actually tons of water, around those roofs."

He said the area was roped off to keep people away from the scene as the building was hazardous.
