Rev. Paul Shanley Held On Abuse Charges
The Rev. Paul Shanley is facing criminal charges of molesting young boys. He was arrested in a San Diego apartment and extradited to Massachusetts in May.
Shanley, 71, is a central figure in the sex abuse scandal that has led to calls for Law's resignation. Documents revealed earlier this year that the archdiocese knew as early as 1967 of abuse claims against him, but did little more than transfer him from parish to parish.
Shanley has pleaded not guilty to three criminal charges of child rape. Prosecutors said he took the victim, now 24, out of religious education classes at St. John Parish in Newton, Mass., and raped him in the rectory, the bathroom and the confessional, when the boy was 6 to 13.
